Christine Avey

Co-founder /educator
Christine Avey graduated from Queen’s University in 1995 with a degree in Psychology and Geography.  After graduating she traveled extensively throughout New Zealand and Australia before returning home to complete her B.Ed at the University of Calgary in 2001.  After volunteering at the Cross Conservation Area she quickly realized that she could combine her passion for nature and the environment and share this with her students.  Over the next 20 years she would incorporate Environmental Education throughout the elementary curriculum and weave in these foundational concepts in an interdisciplinary and inquiry based manner.  In 2014 she developed the PEEL (People for Energy and Environmental Literacy) with an industry expert to ensure that her students would be informed on the very complex issue of climate change and sustainability.   Very generous support from the Community Environment Action Grant has enabled Christine to spend the past 3 years working with over 200 Alberta educators to support them in incorporating the PEEL program into their practice.  Currently the PEEL program is in its 5th year at Westmount Charter School.
