TGIF! - Our Favorite Upper Elementary Math Games
Tarynne will present her favorite upper elementary math games that help teach the following math concepts: review of fact fluency, place value including decimals, fractions and more. During the session you will play many games, learn how to differentiate them to meet the wide range of students in your program, how to integrate them into math centers, develop math journals, use games for assessment and for developing math talks. Student samples will be shared throughout to highlight the deep understanding students can attain while playing the games. Cards, dice and math shakers will be used, and gameboards will be provided. From “Sage on the Stage” to “Guide on the Side”
One of the central goals of education in Alberta is to personalise education for each student. In this workshop I will present how I taught students in my physics, chemistry, science and mathematics classes through a method that I call Structured Independent Learning. The intention of this workshop is to describe how I provided an environment in which students could find their own path through the learning of the course material. In this environment students learned time management and self-responsibility skills, independent and inter-dependent learning skills, and they learned the course material in greater depth. The workshop closes with a discussion of how teachers can shift from being a Sage on the Stage to being a Guide on the Side in their own practice.

Brain Magic Math Facts
Participants will be walked through the process of teaching the times tables. Step one is learning the 'Magic Numbers', a set of mnemonic images that represent the numbers 1 through 10 with auditory, visual and kinaesthetic connections to make them easy to remember. Step Two is to learn the first set of stories that connect numbers in the brain ways we naturally remember. This eliminates the need to finger count or draw sets to solve, even for the larger questions. Step Three is walking a learner through a math fact from the two numbers to a simple story to the answer in the form of a memory palace and object. Teacher get to be a part of the learning experience without the need to take notes or listen to a lecture.

We will work together as learners to solve low-floor, high- ceiling problems. We will communicate, collaborate, reason, and persevere. We will work together as teachers to discuss a problem-solving classroom, culture, and framework. We will talk about obstacles to learning, thinking, and problem solving in math class and how to overcome them. It doesn't have to be that way.

All Math starts as a picture in your mind… a way to see the problem, a way to hold the numbers still while you look for the relationships that you can use to answer the question. More than Paint by Numbers: What does it mean to develop Mathematical Competence?
Math should always be both Challenging and Doable, but for too many kids, it is one or the other.

Our task as teachers is to build upon a base of Numeracy to introduce, explore, develop and refine new ideas in context... to help the learner make sense of the relationships between magnitude and multitude.

We have an intentional role in helping kids assemble all the moving parts into a fabric of Mathematical Understanding that lets them move from ‘Counting to Calculating’ and from ‘Representing to Reasoning’. 

Success in Math Class needs to be "Hard Fun".  How do we achieve that goal?

Reflective Experiences - By helping to expand the learners’ explicit understandings into implicit ideas, we help them to engage with a large variety of situations using a (relatively) small number of tools.

Hard Fun - By balancing the degree of challenge (in the math) with the knowledge and skills the student brings to the task, we help keep math interesting and full of wonder.

By building on a Progression of Learning, we can help the learners see that none of this is new; that creating deep, flexible understandings is a journey worth taking.

I will present and show a couple sample projects I have created in the past and talk about how I integrate the curriculum to create a well rounded learning experience for all in a very purposeful manner. The interesting thing about this session is how the project is planned around outcomes from more than one course but uses student voice and choice to help engage the learner. I have seen observed interesting changes in my students implementing these projects over the years and I am looking forward to sharing my observations with others who are interested in this teaching style.
