There is a ever-growing body of evidence-based research that demonstrates that working with animals leads to increased physiological, emotional, and psychological well-being including an increase in self-esteem, self-awareness, empathy, concentration/focus, communication skills, and pro-social behaviours; and reduction in stress/anxiety, depression, anti-social behaviours, and trauma symptoms. In this session attendees will explore the physiological and psychological benefits to working with animals, and ways in which professionals can integrate the use of animals in helping children overcome emotional obstacles; and increase levels of wellness, resiliency, and connection. The instructor, Tammy Schamuhn, is a Registered Psychologist who developed both canine and equine assisted therapy programs for children and teens, and consults with a variety of organizations across Canada on how to ethically utilize animals therapeutically.
