Key differences in the psychological worlds of adults and kids often lead to conflict. This session will look at specific skills for listening to young people in ways that build trust and cultivate communication. Life Space Crisis Intervention (LSCI) is a therapeutic, verbal strategy for turning crisis situations into learning opportunities for children and youth with chronic patterns of self-defeating behaviours. LSCI provides educators, counselors, youth workers, parents and other caring adults with a roadmap through conflict to desired outcomes, using problems as an opportunity to reach and create positive relationships with youth. The LSCI skills of Drain Off and Timeline de-escalate a young person in crisis and help that young person put language to emotion, leading to insights and long-term behavioral change. More than 80% of classroom problems are caused by 10% of students who challenge and undermine teacher authority. These students are skilled in frustrating adults and pushing the emotional buttons of even the most competent teachers.
